Terra Thread was founded in 2017 in Mission Viejo, California by the father-daughter team of Vikrant (Vik) Giri and Vizan Giri, Originally from Nepal, Vik founded the parent company Gallant International Inc. in 2009 as a B Corp-certified supplier of organic cotton products. When Vizan joined while in college, she identified a market gap: virtually no affordable, sustainably-produced backpacks existed for everyday consumers.
The core material is 14 oz heavy-duty GOTS-certified organic cotton canvas sourced from Fairtrade-certified family farmers in India who rely on rain-fed agriculture. Manufacturing takes place in Fair Trade USA certified factories in India, keeping sourcing and production in the same country. Dyes are GOTS-certified, hardware uses lead-free YKK metal zippers, and all packaging is plastic-free.
