Thought
Rated: Excellent
Price: $$
Location: UK
Quick verdict
Thought is best for eco-conscious shoppers seeking affordable sustainable socks in playful designs, backed by nearly 30 years of heritage in natural fibers. The brand's GOTS-certified organic cotton and bamboo viscose materials are genuine strengths. Critical caveat: Thought entered administration in September 2023 and was acquired by Wourth Group (formerly WoolOvers Group) in 2024, with its product range slashed from a full clothing line to primarily socks and basics. Customer service and quality have drawn significant complaints post-acquisition.

Rating breakdown
Uses bamboo viscose, GOTS-certified organic cotton, recycled polyester, hemp, and wool. Only a medium proportion of materials are eco-friendly, and some products still contain conventional polyester, nylon, and acrylic.
Has a Code of Conduct covering ILO principles and long-standing factory relationships (~20 years with some Chinese suppliers). However, Thought does not disclose final production locations and it is unclear whether living wages are ensured across the supply chain.
Uses sea freight for lower-carbon shipping, reuses most offcuts, supports TRAID textile recycling charity, and uses FSC-certified paper packaging. Lacks published carbon data, climate targets, or any formal circularity program.
The weakest category. No public supplier list, no sustainability report, and the post-acquisition website has stripped back sustainability content significantly. The available sustainability information predates the administration and may not reflect current practices under Wourth Group ownership.
Socks at £5–7 (~$7–9) or 3-for-£15 (~$19) represent solid value for sustainable socks. However, multiple Trustpilot reviews report quality issues, holes developing quickly and fabric degradation, which undermines the value proposition.
What they do well
- Nearly 30-year pioneer in sustainable fibers: one of the first brands to use bamboo, hemp, and organic cotton at scale, dating back to 1995
- Genuinely affordable entry point: 3-for-£15 sock bundles make certified sustainable socks accessible to budget-conscious buyers
- Playful, broad sock designs: hundreds of patterns in bamboo and organic cotton across men's, women's, and children's ranges
- TRAID partnership: supports UK textile recycling charity, giving garments a second life
- GOTS and OEKO-TEX certified products ensure organic integrity and chemical safety on certified items
Room for improvement
- Transparency gaps remain significant. The brand does not disclose production locations, is unclear on living wages, and has no public supplier list or sustainability report.
About Thought
Thought was born in 1995 in Australia, founded by John and Rachel Snare, who wanted stylish clothing made from natural materials. The first collection was a men's hemp beachwear capsule—in 2002 the brand moved to London, selling at Portobello Road and Camden Lock markets. It launched its women's line in 2005 and rebranded from Braintree Clothing to Thought in 2017.
Key materials include bamboo viscose, GOTS-certified organic cotton, recycled polyester, hemp, wool, and linen. GOTS certification covers organic fiber content and mandates social and environmental standards throughout the textile supply chain. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 ensures finished products are free from harmful chemicals. Manufacturing takes place primarily in China, India, and Turkey.
In September 2023, Thought entered administration amid a challenging economic environment. The business was purchased in November 2023 and formally acquired by Wourth Group (backed by Scandinavian PE firm Verdane) in June 2024. The product range was drastically reduced to socks, loungewear, underwear, tights, and accessories, Shipping in the UK is via Evri at £3.45 standard (free over £49), with international options from £8.95–£19.95. Returns have a 30-day window. Current pricing (individual socks at ~$7–9, sock gift boxes at ~$19–25, nightwear at ~$32–57) is competitive versus peers like BAM Bamboo Clothing.
