Happsy

Quick verdict

Best for anyone seeking a genuinely certified organic mattress at the lowest possible price point (consistently identified as the most affordable GOTS-certified organic mattress on the market. What stands out is the extraordinary certification stack: GOTS, GOLS, MADE SAFE, EWG Verified, and GREENGUARD Gold on a single product. The main caveat is limited firmness options) side sleepers may need the additional topper ($249–$499), and the 120-night trial is shorter than competitors like Avocado (365 nights).

Rating breakdown

Materials & Sourcing
5/5

Organic cotton (GOTS), organic wool (GOTS), organic Dunlop latex (GOLS/FSC-certified from Sri Lanka/India), non-GMO sugarcane PLA, and steel pocketed coils assembled entirely without glues or adhesives. Excludes polyurethane foam, synthetic latex, chemical flame retardants, fibreglass, formaldehyde, vinyl, and PFAS. Exceptional.

Labor & Ethics
3/5

Manufactured in the USA in Happsy's own certified organic factory. GOTS and GOLS certifications include social criteria. However, there is no specific labour transparency, no published wage data, no standalone labour audit disclosures, and no Fair Trade certification.

Environmental Impact
4/5

1% for the Planet membership is meaningful. Organic farming reduces pesticide load, natural latex is renewable, and the dedicated organic-only factory prevents contamination. However, there are no published carbon footprint data, no specific packaging sustainability claims, and no end-of-life mattress recycling programme.

Transparency
3.5/5

Earns credit for an unusually careful FTC Green Guides compliance statement and for clearly explaining what each certification means. But no sustainability report, no factory-level detail beyond "USA," and no supply chain map are published.

Price-to-Value
4.5/5

A Queen mattress at $1,399 matches Avocado's budget Eco Organic line while carrying more certifications, and dramatically undercuts parent company Naturepedic ($2,699+). The 20-year warranty and free shipping sweeten the deal. Frequent sales (20% off observed) improve value further.

What they do well

  • Most affordable certified organic mattress available: consistently confirmed across expert review sites like GoodBed, Sleep Junkie, and Sleepopolis
  • Industry-leading certification stack: GOTS + GOLS + MADE SAFE + EWG Verified + GREENGUARD Gold is one of the most comprehensive certification portfolios in the mattress industry
  • Completely glue-free construction throughout the entire mattress, eliminating formaldehyde from adhesives: described as "a rarity in the industry"
  • Backed by Naturepedic's 20+ years of expertise: same materials, same certifications, more accessible price point
  • 1% for the Planet member, directing proceeds to environmental nonprofits including The Conservation Alliance

Room for improvement

  • Not B Corp certified, competitor Avocado holds B Corp, Fair Trade, and Climate Neutral certifications, which Happsy lacks. This is the most significant gap versus its primary competitor.
  • No end-of-life recycling programme and no published carbon footprint data. For a brand this certification-heavy, the absence of a sustainability report or climate targets feels like a missed opportunity.

About Happsy

Happsy was created in 2017 by Naturepedic, the organic mattress company founded in 2003 by Barry A. Cik, a board-certified environmental engineer. Cik started Naturepedic after failing to find a safe crib mattress for his first grandchild; Happsy was born as the affordable DTC spin-off, using "the exact same materials, with the exact same certifications" as Naturepedic, but in a bed-in-a-box format at roughly half the price. The family business (Barry and sons Jeff and Jason Cik) operates from Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

The mattress features a 2-inch layer of GOLS-certified Dunlop latex (sourced from Sri Lanka or India) atop 8 inches of glue-free pocketed coils, wrapped in GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool. The wool serves as a natural flame barrier, eliminating chemical flame retardants. The finished mattress, not just individual components, carries GOTS certification, which requires 95%+ certified organic materials and covers social responsibility criteria.

Happsy ships free (compressed in a box) throughout the contiguous US, with a 120-night trial and 20-year limited warranty (full coverage for 10, prorated for 10). No white-glove delivery or old-mattress removal. At $1,399 for a Queen, Happsy undercuts Avocado's standard Green Mattress ($2,099) and its own parent Naturepedic EOS Classic ($2,699+), making it the clear entry point to certified organic sleep.
