Boll & Branch

Quick verdict

Boll & Branch is best for eco-conscious consumers willing to invest in premium, ethically-made bedding and home textiles with verifiable supply chain transparency. What stands out is an unmatched certification stack: the first-ever Fair Trade Certified bedding company, combined with GOTS, OEKO-TEX, and B Corp certification. Their "Origin Track" feature lets customers trace product journeys from farm to home. Three former US presidents have reportedly slept on their sheets. The main caveat is the absence of a circularity programme or formal net-zero climate targets despite the brand's $100M+ revenue scale.

Materials & Sourcing
4.5/5

100% organic long-staple cotton across all core bedding, sourced from CHETNA Organic cooperative farmers in Orissa, India. GOTS certified, non-GMO, grown without pesticides. Dyed with non-toxic ingredients, no chlorine or formaldehyde. Reported 592 million gallons of water saved in 2018 alone vs. conventional cotton. Labor & Ethics
4.5/5

Fair Trade Certified (industry first). Third-party auditor present daily at each factory. Ensures living wages in most of supply chain. Paid nearly $500,000 in additional wages to farmers and factory workers. Purchased 2.4 million pounds of Fair Trade seed cotton, helping keep 12,800 farmers out of debt. Manufacturing in Kolkata (India), Guimaraes (Portugal), Turkey, and Pakistan.

Environmental Impact
4/5

High proportion of eco-friendly materials limits chemicals, water, and wastewater. Uses sea freight to reduce carbon footprint. Packaging uses 80%+ recycled content with water-based adhesives, fully recyclable. Organic farming promotes soil fertility and biodiversity. However, no published Scope 3 emissions, no Science-Based Targets, no net-zero commitment, and no circularity/take-back programme.

Transparency
4.5/5

"Origin Track" on website traces product journey from farm to finished product. Traces all of their supply chain. Published a 10-year Impact Report. Third-party auditor present daily at factories. Multiple independent certifications provide verification layers.

Price-to-Value
3.5/5

Premium pricing: queen sheet sets $229-$279, with Reserve line roughly double. Comparable to Brooklinen ($220-$259) and below Parachute ($349) and Coyuchi ($278-$348), but well above budget organic options like Quince (~$139). Justified by organic materials, Fair Trade practices, and reported multi-year durability. Free shipping on orders $100+, 30-night sleep trial, and complimentary returns.

What they do well

  • Industry pioneer with unmatched certification stack. The first-ever Fair Trade Certified bedding company, combined with GOTS, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, and B Corp certification, an exceptionally rare quad-certification in the bedding industry
  • Full supply chain transparency and traceability. The "Origin Track" tool lets customers trace every product's journey from cotton farming through dyeing, cutting, sewing, and shipping, with a daily third-party auditor present in each factory
  • Measurable, quantified social impact. Over 12,800 farmers kept out of debt through Fair Trade cotton purchasing, nearly $500,000 in additional living-wage premiums paid to workers, and partnership with Not for Sale (anti-human-trafficking nonprofit)
  • Consistently praised product quality. Named "Best Splurge Sheets" by HGTV, "Best Organic Percale Sheets" by Reviewed, and recommended by Consumer Reports, with thousands of customer reviews praising softness that improves with washing

Room for improvement

  • Limited climate commitments for a brand this size. At $100M+ revenue, the absence of published Scope 3 emissions data, Science-Based Targets, a formal net-zero commitment, or a circularity/take-back programme is a notable gap. Competitors like Coyuchi have moved further on climate action.

About Boll & Branch

Scott Tannen, a former Wrigley and Kraft Foods executive, and Missy Tannen, a former third-grade teacher, launched Boll & Branch in January 2014 after learning about the unethical and environmentally destructive practices in the conventional home-textiles industry. They were particularly moved by the plight of cotton farmers exposed to hazardous pesticides, with an estimated 300,000 falling victim to poisoning annually. The brand name itself is symbolic: the cotton "boll" and "branch" represent their mission to protect organic cotton farmers.

The company's material foundation is 100% organic long-staple cotton sourced from the CHETNA Organic cooperative in Orissa, India. It is non-GMO, grown without pesticides (farmers plant marigolds instead), and GOTS certified. The cotton requires 90% less water than conventional farming. Additional materials include ethically sourced American down (pillows), Primaloft (down alternatives), wool (mattresses), Turkish cotton (flannels and bath), Supima cotton, cotton-cashmere blends, and linen. All fabrics are dyed with non-toxic ingredients and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified.

Manufacturing happens across four countries: Kolkata, India (primary, with daily third-party auditors), Guimaraes, Portugal (flannel, using traditional artisan weaving), Turkey (some bath and home products), and Pakistan. Down pillows are assembled in the USA. All facilities are Fair Trade Certified.

The brand raised $7M in Series A (2016), $4M in Series B (2017), and a landmark $100M investment from L Catterton (LVMH-affiliated private equity) in 2019. Revenue has surpassed $100M annually. Distribution spans their DTC website, 15 owned retail stores, Nordstrom (21 stores), Bloomingdale's, and Amazon. Shipping is free on US orders over $100 with complimentary returns and a 30-night sleep guarantee. Packaging uses 80%+ recycled content with water-based adhesives and is fully recyclable.
