Quick verdict
Fifth Origins is the strongest sustainability story in this batch. An Amsterdam-designed, India-handmade artisan brand specialising in capes, ponchos, and upcycled Kantha pieces. Living wages are verified through time-in-motion studies, the ReLove programme and free repair service demonstrate genuine circularity, and materials span Himalayan wool, organic cotton, hemp, and recycled vintage saris. The 4.8/5 Trustpilot score from 347 reviews is exceptional. The main limitation is reliance on self-reporting rather than conventional third-party certifications.

What they do well
- Verified living wages: Uses time-in-motion studies to understand production time and adjust wages accordingly, going beyond minimum wage to ensure artisans earn a genuine living wage.
- Exceptional circularity programmes: ReLove Programme (return used capes for upcycling), Waste-to-Wonder Collection (recycled vintage saris), No Waste Sale (leftover materials), and free repairs within one year.
- Ethical artisan partnerships: Each cape involves approximately 15 rural artisans across multiple Indian regions. The Cape of Hope Initiative integrates childcare centres within artisan units for mothers.
- Outstanding consumer trust: 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 347 reviews, with consistent praise for quality, craftsmanship, sustainability commitment, and personal customer service.
- Deeply sustainable materials: Himalayan wool from free-roaming sheep, indigenous Kala organic cotton, vintage Kantha fabric, hemp, nettle, and eco-friendly dyes with safe water recycling.
Room for improvement
- No conventional third-party certifications: No B Corp, GOTS, Fair Trade, or OEKO-TEX despite strong practices. Relies on COSH! verification and self-reporting. The blockchain verification platform has been in development since November 2021.
- Air freight from India: Despite climate-neutral shipping methods, products handmade across multiple Indian regions must travel to the Netherlands and then to global customers, adding significant transport emissions.
About Fifth Origins
Fifth Origins grew from founder Sindhu Holla's work with Indian artisan communities beginning around 2013, formally launching as a brand in approximately 2018. Holla, a TiasNimbas Business School graduate, established a design studio in Amsterdam with a flagship presence at De Hallen (Makers Store). Every product is handmade across multiple Indian regions: Himachal Pradesh for Himalayan wool from the Gaddi community, Madhya Pradesh for rural women artisan groups, Uttar Pradesh for dyeing and embroidery, Gujarat for indigenous Kala organic cotton via Khamir, and Kumaon for handmade soaps.
The labour practices are the brand's strongest differentiator. Fifth Origins claims to achieve living wages for artisans, verified through time-in-motion studies that measure actual production time and adjust compensation accordingly. Artisans are positioned as 'micro-entrepreneurs' and 'co-creators' rather than factory workers. The Cape of Hope Initiative integrates childcare centres within artisan production units, addressing a practical barrier that prevents many women from participating in formal work. COSH!, the Belgian ethical fashion platform, has verified direct supplier contact including regular visits.
Circularity programmes are exceptionally developed for a brand of this scale. The ReLove Programme accepts returned capes for upcycling or resale through a secondhand channel. The Waste-to-Wonder Collection transforms vintage Kantha fabric. Old cotton saris collected across India. Into jackets, kimonos, vests, and accessories where every piece is one-of-a-kind. The No Waste Sale offers items made from leftover production materials—a free repair programme covers the first year, with repair patches provided from Waste-to-Wonder leftovers and instructional repair videos available for self-service.
Fifth Origins has been featured by Project Cece, COSH!, Ethical Fashion Guide, Our Good Brands Directory, and Rest Less. Holla has been quoted as an expert source by Remake, and the brand has collaborated with Fashion Revolution. The 4.8 out of 5 Trustpilot rating from 347 reviews stands in stark contrast to many brands in the ethical fashion space, with reviewers consistently praising product quality, craftsmanship, and thoughtful packaging.
