Mashu
Rated: Great
Price: $$$
Location: UK
Quick verdict
Mashu is best for design-conscious shoppers seeking statement vegan handbags crafted from genuinely innovative plant-based materials like grape leather, apple leather, and Piñatex. What stands out is their per-product environmental impact labels (verified by Compare Ethics) and the striking sculptural hardware that makes every bag instantly recognisable. The caveat: it's a small, premium brand (most bags £275–£445) with limited customer reviews and unclear living-wage assurances.

Rating breakdown
One of the most diverse plant-based material portfolios of any bag brand, BioVeg (corn-based), Piñatex, Desserto (cactus), Uppeal (apple), Vegea (grape), cork, hemp, recycled polyester suede, and repurposed Greek oak handles. Explicitly avoids PU, PVC, and virgin polyester. EU-sourced materials (Italy, Netherlands, Greece).
All bags handcrafted by family-run artisan workshops in Athens, Greece (medium-risk EU country), Works with women artisans for cord handles. However, it's not clear if living wages are ensured, and the brand doesn't specify what percentage of its supply chain is visited.
Carbon-neutral shipping via DHL, 5 trees planted per bag via Treeapp, recycled/recyclable packaging with OEKO-TEX cotton dust bags and FSC tissue paper. Season-less production model avoids fashion-calendar overproduction. But no formal carbon measurement or published climate targets.
Third-party verified Compare Ethics labels on each product page show specific environmental impact. Exact material breakdowns with sourcing countries disclosed per product. No formal impact reports or factory lists published, but above average for a micro-brand.
Premium pricing (£275–£557 / ~$345–$700) reflects artisan handcrafting, innovative materials, and small-batch production. Comparable to Angela Roi and BEEN London, significantly cheaper than Stella McCartney. Archive sales offer meaningful discounts. Includes free lifetime repairs.
What they do well
- Material innovation leader: uses grape leather, cactus leather, pineapple leather, apple leather, cork, and hemp across its range, with repurposed Greek oak furniture offcuts for handles
- Per-product impact transparency: each bag page features a Compare Ethics panel showing its verified environmental footprint, which is exceptionally rare for a brand this size
- Free lifetime repairs on all bags, demonstrating genuine commitment to product longevity
- Season-less production model: one of the first luxury bag brands to completely abandon the seasonal fashion calendar
- 100% PETA-Approved Vegan: including all glues, dyes, and hardware finishes
Room for improvement
- Living-wage clarity, it is unclear whether artisan workers are paid living wages, and the brand does not disclose what percentage of its supply chain is audited.
- No formal impact reporting, no published annual sustainability report, factory list, or quantitative environmental metrics beyond the per-product Compare Ethics panels.
- Some materials contain synthetics, BioVeg, while partly bio-based (73% corn), still includes 27% recycled polyester; Uppeal apple leather contains 34% recycled PU, creating a slight tension with claims of "100% plant-based materials."
About Mashu
Mashu was founded in 2018 by Greek-British designer Ioanna Topouzoglou, who worked at several accessories brands before adopting a vegan lifestyle and realising virtually no bag brands combined genuine style with genuine sustainability. Drawing on her Greek heritage (inspired by Cycladic architecture, Art Deco interiors, and sea-worn forms) she began collaborating with Athenian artisan workshops, becoming the first brand to ask these traditional leatherworkers to craft bags using plant-based alternatives.
Every bag is handcrafted in Athens, Greece using materials sourced almost entirely within the EU. Fabrics come from Italy (BioVeg, chains) and the Netherlands (organic cotton linings). Hardware is gold-plated brass made in Greece. Wooden handles are repurposed from Greek furniture factory offcuts, making each one unique. The brand holds PETA-Approved Vegan certification across its entire range and uses OEKO-TEX certified cotton dust bags and FSC tissue paper for packaging.
Shipping is carbon-neutral via DHL (free over £200), and 5 trees are planted per bag through Treeapp. Pricing ranges from ~£107 for small accessories to ~£557 for larger bags, positioning Mashu in the accessible luxury tier, comparable to Angela Roi and BEEN London but well below Stella McCartney. Ecothes has featured Mashu in both its vegan handbags and sustainable handbags round-ups.
