Wolven
Rated: Good

Quick verdict
A design-forward sustainable activewear brand with strong recycled material credentials and culturally-inspired prints. Held back by labour transparency gaps and a lapsed climate certification. Wolven's core fabric is 84% GRS-certified recycled PET with OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, among the highest recycled content ratios in activewear. Founder Kiran Jade's geometric prints, drawing from South Asian textile traditions, create genuine design differentiation. However The Pre-Loved resale programme and 1% for the Planet membership add meaningful circularity and giving components.

Rating breakdown
84% GRS-certified recycled PET / 16% spandex made from post-consumer plastic bottles, with OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification confirming chemical safety. Carbon-neutral modal from sustainably harvested beech trees in select pieces. The inherent limitation is microplastic shedding during washing and the petroleum-derived spandex component.
Primary manufacturing in China (extreme labour abuse risk) with some LA production. Chinese factory holds a WCA audit score of 87%.
Recycled core materials, 100% recycled/compostable packaging, one pound of ocean-bound plastic removed per order, and limited-batch production. Pre-Loved resale section on website. However, Climate Neutral certification has lapsed as of late 2024, emissions data isn't publicly reported, and no formal reduction targets exist.
Publishes annual impact reports (2022, 2023, 2024) and discloses supply chain partner locations on transparency page. However, Code of Conduct is not publicly available, emissions data is unreported, and "climate positive" claims are unverifiable without published data.
Pre-Loved secondhand marketplace directly on the website enables buying and selling used Wolven garments. 1% for the Planet membership. One pound of ocean-bound plastic removed per order. 100% recycled/compostable packaging with hemp twine wrapping. However, the lapsed Climate Neutral certification undermines environmental credibility.
What they do well
- 84% GRS-certified recycled PET fabric. Among the highest recycled content ratios in activewear, verified by the Global Recycled Standard with OEKO-TEX Standard 100 chemical safety certification
- Truly distinctive, culturally-inspired design. Founder Kiran Jade's geometric and nature-inspired prints, drawing from Indian and Pakistani textile traditions, set Wolven apart from solid-colour sustainable activewear brands
- 1% for the Planet + ocean cleanup. Donates a percentage of sales to environmental organisations and removes one pound of ocean-bound plastic for every order placed
- Pre-Loved circularity programme. Offers a secondhand marketplace directly on their website, enabling customers to buy and sell used Wolven garments
Room for improvement
- Labour practices are the biggest gap. primary manufacturing in China with no evidence of living wages, no public Code of Conduct, and only partial supply chain tracing
- Lapsed Climate Neutral certification. Previously certified but no longer current as of late 2024; claims of being "climate positive" cannot be independently verified because emissions data is not publicly reported
About Wolven
Wolven was founded in 2014 by Kiran Jade, a South Asian-American artist and designer, while she was studying Fine Art at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, Inspired by her mother's tradition of buying fabrics at Eastern markets and having custom clothes sewn, Jade began merging geometric textile art with activewear, She and partner Will Ryan started by selling at yoga and music festivals before officially launching the brand (initially as Wolven Threads) in 2015.
The brand's core material is 84% recycled PET (post-consumer plastic bottles) / 16% spandex, certified by the Global Recycled Standard and OEKO-TEX Standard 100. The fabric is quick-drying, moisture-wicking, and antimicrobial. Select pieces use carbon-neutral modal from sustainably harvested beech trees. Primary manufacturing takes place in China, with some production in Los Angeles. The Chinese factory holds a WCA audit score of 87%.
Wolven's environmental commitments extend beyond materials. Packaging is 100% recycled or compostable, including hemp twine wrapping and compostable bags. The brand removes one pound of ocean-bound plastic for every order placed and donates through 1% for the Planet. A Pre-Loved resale section on the website enables customers to buy and sell used Wolven garments, adding a genuine circularity component. Annual impact reports have been published since 2022.
Celebrity endorsements from Miley Cyrus and Sophie Turner have boosted visibility, and the brand has grown to over 500,000 Instagram followers. Pricing ranges from approximately $42 for bikini pieces to $128 for one-piece swimwear, with leggings at $88-$102: comparable to Lululemon. Frequent sales improve accessibility. Wolven competes directly with Girlfriend Collective and prAna but differentiates through its art-first print design philosophy.
