WAWWA

Quick verdict
A genuinely committed UK-made sustainable basics brand with near-perfect environmental credentials and a real slow-fashion ethos. WAWWA manufactures in-house at a historic Manchester mill paying the UK real living wage, uses GOTS-certified organic cotton as its core material, and packages everything in compostable sugarcane waste that decomposes in 60 days The main caveats are premium pricing ($$$$ tier), long delivery times for pre-order items (3-6+ weeks), and labour documentation gaps. Only about 50% of the supply chain is audited, and living wage verification doesn't extend beyond the UK in-house workers.

Rating breakdown
GOTS-certified organic cotton as the core material, supplemented by recycled polyester, waxed organic cotton woven in Scotland, and water-based inks The only gap is a relatively narrow material palette compared to larger sustainable brands.
In-house Manchester factory pays the UK real living wage. Solar-powered GOTS-certified factory in Portugal and Fairtrade-certified, renewable-energy-powered factory in India. However, no formal published Code of Conduct, no clear living wage definition across the full supply chain, and only approximately 50% of the supply chain is audited.
Near-best-in-class for a small brand. Compostable sugarcane packaging decomposing in 60 days, slow-fashion limited-batch production, proximity manufacturing cutting transport emissions, and factories powered by solar and wind energy. No formal circularity or take-back programme exists yet.
Names factory locations (Manchester, Portugal, India, Bolton) and describes manufacturing processes in press interviews and product pages. However, no formal sustainability report, no published Code of Conduct, and only partial supply chain tracing, Understandable for a micro-brand with 2-10 employees but still a gap.
1+1 social impact collection donates matching items to people experiencing homelessness. Compostable sugarcane packaging is genuinely innovative. Seasonless products and made-to-order items minimise overproduction. However, no formal take-back, repair, or resale programme exists.
What they do well
- UK-made in a historic Manchester mill. In-house production in Ancoats revives local textile heritage while paying the real living wage and minimising transport emissions
- Outstanding environmental credentials: GOTS organic cotton, recycled materials, compostable sugarcane packaging, water-based inks, and renewable-energy factories demonstrate best-in-class environmental practices
- 100% PETA-approved vegan since 2017 — the entire product range uses zero animal-derived materials, earning a perfect animals rating
- 1+1 social impact collection. For every hat or pair of socks purchased from the 1+1 line, an identical item is donated to someone experiencing homelessness
- Genuine slow fashion model. Limited production runs, seasonless products, and made-to-order items minimise overproduction waste
Room for improvement
- Labour documentation gaps. Only approximately 50% of the supply chain is audited, with no formal Code of Conduct and no clear living wage definitions beyond in-house UK workers
About WAWWA
WAWWA was founded in 2016 by brothers Sean and Andy in Manchester, England. The origin story is straightforward: they wanted to put graphic designs on T-shirts, researched the fashion industry, were horrified by its environmental impact, and committed to sustainability from day one. They launched with organic cotton tees printed with water-based inks and haven't wavered from that commitment.
The brand's materials backbone is GOTS-certified organic cotton, sourced from a Fairtrade-certified factory in India powered by wind and solar, and a family-run, solar-powered mill in northern Portugal. Their most distinctive move came during COVID-19, when they set up an in-house factory in a historic Victorian mill in Manchester's Ancoats neighbourhood, Originally for PPE production, now their primary facility for accessories and jersey garments. Workers there earn the UK real living wage.
Packaging is 100% compostable, made from sugarcane manufacturing waste, decomposing in 60 days via home composting—a genuinely innovative approach that goes beyond the typical recycled cardboard. WAWWA is stocked by END. Clothing, a major UK retailer, alongside direct-to-consumer sales. The 1+1 social impact collection adds a meaningful giving component: for every hat or pair of socks purchased from the line, an identical item is donated to someone experiencing homelessness.
The main limitations are typical of micro-brands scaling responsibly. Delivery times, particularly for made-to-order items, can stretch to 3-6+ weeks. The most recurring customer complaint on Trustpilot (where the brand still maintains a strong ~4.5/5 rating from approximately 210 reviews). Pricing sits at the premium end, with T-shirts from approximately $32, trousers $150-$230, and outerwear reaching $380+. For genuinely UK-made, organic, small-batch clothing, the prices are justifiable but accessibility is limited.
