Quick verdict
The Phoenix Brand (rebranded to Dinner Service NY around 2022–2023) is best for eco-conscious streetwear fans who want genuinely 100% plastic-free, artist-driven clothing. The brand stands out for its absolute commitment to eliminating synthetic fabrics. Every garment uses plant-based, biodegradable fibres and non-toxic dyes. Their pioneering work developing banana fibre textiles is particularly notable. The caveat: since rebranding, explicit sustainability messaging is less prominent on the new site, and the brand lacks formal third-party sustainability ratings or certifications beyond factory-level GOTS.

Our ratings are based on a scale from 1 (We Avoid) to 5 (Excellent). How we rate
Rating breakdown
Exclusively uses organic cotton, hemp, lyocell (Tencel), and innovative banana fibre. 100% plastic-free, 100% biodegradable, toxin-free production. India factory is GOTS-certified. Partnered with Interloop on a 3-year R&D project to develop banana stem fibre textiles.
GOTS-certified India factory requires annual labour audits. Co-founders bring supply chain expertise from Boll & Branch (ethical bedding). However, detailed labour disclosures (wages, factory names) are not publicly available. Pakistan production partner Interloop also serves fast-fashion brands.
Core mission is eliminating plastic from fashion. All garments are biodegradable with no microplastic shedding. Uses closed-loop manufacturing. Limited-edition drop model inherently reduces overproduction. Non-toxic dyes throughout.
Vocal about material commitments in press interviews. However, the current website lacks a detailed sustainability page, certifications page, or supply chain map. No annual impact report.
Tees at $45, jackets at $165, socks at $15. Remarkably accessible for fully sustainable, limited-edition streetwear. Founders explicitly aim to compete with fast fashion prices. Artist-collaboration model adds collectible value.
What they do well
- 100% plastic-free production. Every garment is free of polyester, nylon, and all synthetic fabrics, with all materials being plant-based and biodegradable, a rarity even among "sustainable" brands
- Material innovation leadership. Pioneered banana fibre textiles for fashion through a 3-year R&D partnership with Interloop Limited and the National Textile University in Pakistan
- Accessible pricing for sustainable streetwear: tees at $45, jackets at $165, socks at $15, deliberately positioned to compete with fast fashion rather than luxury eco-brands
- Artist-driven, limited-edition model. Collaborations with musicians (Mt. Joy, Orville Peck, Kota The Friend), cultural brands (Hamilton on Broadway, Prince Street Pizza), and visual artists create unique capsules that reduce overproduction
- Strong founder credentials. Co-founders Gabrielle Gomes (former Head of Analytics at Chanel USA, ex-Boll & Branch) and Trina Assur (also ex-Boll & Branch) bring deep luxury fashion and ethical supply chain expertise
Room for improvement
- Sustainability messaging diluted post-rebrand. The Dinner Service NY branding emphasises "elevated merch drops" and storytelling, while the Phoenix Brand identity was sustainability-first. A dedicated sustainability page with certifications and impact metrics is missing from the current site.
- Limited third-party verification. No B Corp certification, no Remake profile, no Eco-Stylist listing. The only verifiable certification is GOTS at the factory level.
- Lack of detailed labour transparency. Factory names, worker wage data, and independent audit results are not publicly shared. Pakistan production partner Interloop is a large manufacturer that also supplies fast-fashion brands.
About The Phoenix Brand
The Phoenix Brand was founded in 2020–2021 in New York City by Gabrielle Gomes and Trina Assur, who met through their shared work at Boll & Branch. Gomes previously served as Head of Analytics at Chanel USA. Disturbed by the fashion industry's dependence on plastic-based fabrics (65%+ of all clothing), they launched what they called "the first plastic-free and toxin-free streetwear brand."
The brand uses four core materials: organic cotton, hemp, lyocell (from sustainably harvested eucalyptus/beechwood pulp), and banana fibre (from agricultural waste). All dyes and finishes are non-toxic. Their India manufacturing partner is GOTS-certified, and socks are produced seed-to-sew in Pakistan through Interloop Limited, with whom they co-developed banana fibre yarn.
Around 2022–2023, the brand rebranded to Dinner Service NY, pivoting toward artist-driven limited-edition capsule collections while maintaining sustainability commitments. They opened a flagship store at 259 Elizabeth Street in Nolita, NYC in April 2023, growing from pop-ups at Artists & Fleas markets. Products also sell on REVOLVE. Shipping is free on U.S. orders over $150; returns accepted within 14 days for refund, 30 days for store credit. Collections are intentionally limited-run and items frequently sell out. Pricing ranges from $15–$165, placing them in the accessible-to-mid range for sustainable streetwear.
