Underwear
LÉ BUNS

Quick verdict

A beautifully designed, size-inclusive organic underwear and swimwear brand with genuine sustainable material credentials. Let down by offshore manufacturing transparency gaps. GOTS-certified organic cotton across the underwear and loungewear range, combined with regenerated nylon swimwear from recycled fishing nets sourced from Italy, stands out in the intimate apparel space. Size inclusivity from AU 6-20 with D+ cup support is progressive for a small independent brand. However, manufacturing is in Indonesia and China (not Australian-made), there is no evidence of living wages, no formal Code of Conduct, and no sustainability report or quantitative impact data has been published.

Rating breakdown

Materials & Sourcing
4/5

GOTS-certified organic cotton as primary material, complemented by regenerated nylon from recycled fishing nets sourced from Italy for swimwear. Chemical-free plant-based dyes. Strong material story, though the original emphasis on deadstock fabrics appears to have evolved toward certified organic.

Labour & Ethics
3/5

Manufacturing in Indonesia (Bali) and China (Shenzhen) with BSCI and SMETA social compliance audits for parts of the supply chain. Factory described as family-run, female-led operation. However, there is no evidence of living wages and no formal Code of Conduct. The brand's weakest area.

Environmental Impact
3.5/5

Good material choices (organic, recycled) and biodegradable/recycled packaging with eliminated unnecessary materials. Convertible swimwear designs promote longevity. However, no carbon footprint data, no offset programmes, no public impact report, and included polyester wash bags contradict the sustainability message.

Transparency & Accountability
3/5

Traces most of the supply chain and discloses manufacturing locations (Denpasar, Ubud, Shenzhen) and fibre origins (Turkey, China, Italy). Has a downloadable ethical trade policy. Falls short on quantitative data. No impact reports, no wage disclosures, no formal supplier list.

Innovation & Circularity
3/5

Convertible multi-way swimwear designs reduce the need for multiple pieces. Fabric off-cuts donated to local orphanages in Indonesia. Regenerated nylon from fishing nets is genuinely innovative for swimwear. However, no formal take-back or circularity programme exists, and polyester wash bags included with purchases contradict the sustainability positioning.

What they do well

  • GOTS-certified organic cotton. Across the underwear and loungewear range with natural plant-based dyes, backed by independent certification
  • Regenerated nylon swimwear, made from recycled fishing nets sourced from Italy, with convertible multi-way designs reducing the need for multiple pieces
  • Size inclusivity: AU 6-20 with D+ cup support and 360-degree product imagery on diverse body types, progressive for a small independent brand
  • Premium retail validation. Stocked on NET-A-PORTER's NET SUSTAIN platform, alongside coverage in Vogue, Marie Claire, and Refinery29

Room for improvement

  • Labour transparency is the critical gap. No evidence of living wages, no formal Code of Conduct, and limited disclosure about working conditions in Indonesian and Chinese factories
  • No public impact or sustainability report. Qualitative sustainability claims but no quantitative data on carbon footprint, water usage, or waste metrics
  • Polyester wash bags contradict sustainability positioning, Included with every purchase, contributing to microplastic concerns; an easily fixable but conspicuous oversight

About LÉ BUNS

Le Buns was founded in 2016 in Melbourne by Keisha Dessaix, who spent roughly a decade in luxury fashion managing brand portfolios for the Prada Group (including Miu Miu) and Paul Smith. Growing up on the Australian coast, she developed a minimalist wardrobe philosophy but struggled to find organic cotton intimates that were simultaneously feminine, comfortable, and contemporary. The brand launched with a mission of making beautiful garments without compromising the environment or people.

Core materials include GOTS-certified organic cotton (fibres grown in Turkey and China) for underwear and loungewear, and regenerated nylon from recycled post-consumer waste including fishing nets (sourced from Italy) for swimwear. The brand originally emphasised deadstock fabrics, though the current focus has shifted to certified organic and recycled materials. Chemical-free plant-based dyes are used for the naturally dyed collection.

Manufacturing takes place in Indonesia (Bali: Denpasar and Ubud) at a boutique family-run factory led by a female operations manager, and in Shenzhen, China. The brand is designed in Melbourne but is not Australian-made. Social compliance audits (BSCI, SMETA) cover parts of the supply chain, and fabric off-cuts are donated to local orphanages in Indonesia. However, living wage verification and a formal Code of Conduct remain absent.

At the time of research, the brand was running a significant warehouse sale (everything A$10-20), which may signal inventory clearing or a business model shift. Pricing normally sits at the premium end of sustainable underwear: A$45 (~US$29) per brief and A$79 (~US$51) per bralette, Significantly above competitors like Subset, Pact, and Boody. Quality is consistently praised with 4.8-5.0/5 customer ratings on-site.
